Novgorod the Great, the most ancient Russian city was founded in 859.
During the times of the famous Novgorod Republic it was proudly called
"Lord Novgorod the Great". Being the biggest medieval center
of trade, handicraft and culture Novgorod was widely known not only in
Russia but in the countries of Western Europe and Arabic East. Novgorod
is the place where the unique Russian architectural monuments of the XI-XII
centuries are located. Today it is one of the most important scientific,
cultural and industrial centers of North-western Russia. There are theatres,
cinemas, concert halls, libraries, art galleries, museums, and a wide
variety of shops and restaurants It is not very big and conveniently located
between to Russian capitals Moscow (530 km) and St Petersburg (180 km).
