Two day trip to VLADIMIR and SUZDAL.
Set on the steep and picturesque banks of the Klyazma River, Vladimir is one of Russia's oldest cities. This 1,000-year-old city owes its name to the Kievan count Vladimir, who founded the city around 990. He styled this beautiful city after Kiev, which was widely considered an architectural masterpiece at the time. The middle of the 12th century - the years when Vsevolod Big Nest and his older brother Andrei Bogolyubsky reigned in the city - was the height of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. Vladimir was the capital of Russia in the twelfth century before the Mongol invasion; Moscow was its successor. The Assumption Cathedral and Golden Gate are examples of white stone, pre-Mongolian architecture.
