YAROSLAVTHE-WISE
The first school in Novgorod was set up by Grand prince Yaroslav the Wise in the year of 1030. The academic traditions of Novgorod State University go back to the Middle Ages. The University now comprises five Institutes (Institute of Medical Education, Institute of Humanities, Institute of Continuous Pedagogical Education, Institute of Economics and Public Administration, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources), four engineering faculties and five colleges of vocational education. There are more than 70 research laboratories and scientific centers. The University has become a leading regional center of education and science. The University employs 1000 members including 551 doctors of science and 37 members of The Russian Academy of Sciences, The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, The Petrovskaya Academy, The Engineering Academy. Four professors of the university have the title of Merited Scientist of The Russian Federation. The University actively collaborates with foreign universities and other schools of higher education. NovSU has close contacts with universities and colleges of the USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, Norway, France, Poland, Iceland, Finland, and other countries. The University Internet Center is one of the most rapidly developing structures in NovSU. Each student can use Internet facilities for research and communication. University Education All coursework at the University is conducted in Russian. For students without previous formal Russian study, the University provides an intensive preparatory year through its Department of Russian as a Foreign Language. After completing the preparatory program, students receive a certificate and may continue their studies at NovSU or any other Russian University.
